China Tiger: Bed and Breakfast
Heritage house for rent in Penang is very
rare indeed. A newly beautifully restored shop house at China Street in
Penang is now open for guests. Massive restoration work continued for two
years before these three units of adjacent double-storey shop lots were
transformed to a very comfortable retreat right in the middle of George
Town's core zone of the heritage enclave.
Called "China Tiger", it is owned by David and
Rebecca Wilkinson who also happen to live there. Before moving here, they lived
at Loke
Mansion at Gurney Drive.

You can see the labor of love
poured into every corner of the house. Antique wooden furniture abound. The
walls are also decorated with many paintings done by Rebecca herself, who is an
accomplished artist in her own right.

Spacious, airy and full of old
world charm, the owners succeeded in transforming the ruined building. You would
never guess that this building once happened to be set on fire. Now, it is an
oasis of luxurious comfort.

There are only two suites available.
The guests have the privilege to
have their own spiral staircase from the lower floor drawing room right to a
common landing at the top floor.
The bedroom has its own en-suite
bathroom laid with antique tiles but still having hot shower like in any modern
bathroom.
I had the opportunity to visit
this nice heritage house for rent in July 09, during one of the walks organized
by Penang Heritage Trust.
My favorite spot has to be a small rock garden at one of the courtyards.
There were live chicks and little tortoises walking about with no care
in the world on the grassy spot. There is also a well here which was
previously used as a water supply for the previous occupants long time ago.
Guests who stay at China Tiger can participate in any of heritage trail
walks, or use the bicycles available to roam the street of George Town.
They also have the advantage of dining out at many restaurants or food haunts
that are available in the area.
Other facilities included in this
house is a gymnasium where you can work out or practise yoga.
The rate is RM950.00 per suite per night. A surcharge of 20% is applicable over
peak season such as from Christmas right up to Chinese New Year time.
This rate includes breakfast and afternoon tea break.
