Penang Rowing Club

by David West
(London. UK)

Just on the off chance..?

I was Captain of The Penang Rowing Club at Glugor in 1963/4...rowing in oared boats etc.,
The Club 'disappeared' with the construction of the bridge.

Does anyone have memories of?

The Club represented Penang in Hong Kong in 1963 at the Interport Regatta.

I did live at 69 Penang Rd., for a time...lined by palm trees.

And worked for the Mercantile Bank in Beach Street, before merger with the HSBC Bank.
Would love to be in contact from someone from those times.

Ayer Itam Dam was constructed while I was resident in Penang.

Ferries were still in use to get to Butterworth.

David West.
London, UK.

The Green Parrot. NEW
by: David West

I first arrived in Penang in 1962......a couple of well known 'landmarks' disappeared almost right away.
1. The Green Parrot...a bar/nightclub which had an exotic location in Georgetown.
I have met someone in London who remembered it.
Only managed a couple of visits before it disappointingly closed.
So close to home in Peel Avenue..!!
2. A 'European' store...Whitaways? just off Beach Street; which was a haven for a 'pot of tea'..!!
There was probably a bigger branch in Singapore?

Further reflections. NEW
by: Anonymous

I believe the assets of the Club were transferred to the Penang Swimming Club?

I used to go to what was known as the Chinese Swimming Club, frequently in the days before they actually had a swimming pool!

For meals etc.,

Peel Ave. NEW
by: Anonymous

The address was actually Peel Avenue.

When I arrived in Penang in late 1961 it was like arriving at a flying club!
Grass runway...a windsock!
I arrived in a DC3.
