Penang Sketches Art Exhibition in Black and WhitePenang sketches done by a French artist Charles Chauderlot were compiled and are now being displayed at Jin Xiu Art Gallery at no. 58, Muntri Street until 11th December 2009.
His work portrays views of George Town and also Malacca done in black and white strokes using Chinese brush techniques, combined with Western style art which are both unique and very special. The essence of Old World charm is perfectly executed and immortalized on his canvas. This collection is entitled, "Penang, Memoires D'encre" (Penang - Memories in Ink).
I was invited to attend the opening ceremony at the gallery on 26th November 2009. The beautifully restored shop house played host to the event. This event was jointly organized by Alliance Francaise and Penang Passion. After speeches by dignitaries and also Director of Penang Passion, Tze Yin Koh, the exhibition was formally opened. This gallery also is actually a restaurant that serves authentic Nyonya cuisine. Guests were treated to a spread of scrumptious high-tea made by their in-house chefs. They were served with Chinese tea and French wine. Charles Chauderlot used to live in China and Macau and can speak fluent Mandarin. He has done a lot of work including some paintings of sceneries in the Forbidden City. Below are some photos of the event, including an example of the artist's work.
