Tropical Spice Garden

Tropical Spice Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Penang. Besides being the first and only one of its kind, it is also an embodiment of a good example of a nicely maintained nature heritage. It is located at Teluk Bahang, facing one of the beaches. If you stay at Batu Ferringhi, it is about 2 km to the west from Bayview Hotel or Ferringhi Village.

The visitors can walk in and stroll on their own or follow a guided tour. You might be forgiven if you forgot that you were still in Penang. The surrounding is green, lush and aromatic with the natural scents of local herbs and spices. It is like stepping back into time, when spice trade was the commerce that generated the wealth of the nation at that time.

The Malay Pavillion
The warm Malay Pavillion greets you as soon
as you step into the Spice Garden.

You can learn quite a bit about the spice trade back then at the Spice Museum which is located at Lone Crag Villa, an old colonial bungalow located in situ which also houses a gift shop and a small tea house.

There are three trails at Tropical Spice Garden that you can follow and they vary in difficulty.

Plant names are labeled accordingly so that you will know their common names, scientific names and also countries of origin.

Even though an entrance fee is charged, the fee will more than compensate the priceless experience that you will enjoy during your visit.

Tropical Spice Garden is also a perfect venue for an intimate gathering, such as an outdoor tropical wedding do, a team-building for companies and also maybe a school reunion for old friends.

Pre-booked cooking classes are also be scheduled. A local cook will guide you on the names of spices usually used in Malay cooking, you can have the experience of plucking your own fresh herbs and spices too. All in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere.

It is also good to know while this garden was built in 2004, the designer team tried very hard to maintain the natural terrain and to preserve a lot of local vegetation so as not to destroy this delicate environment. The results are truly pleasing to the eyes.
