World Tourism DayA Guided Walk in Penang Heritage TrailThis year, World Tourism Day will commemorate its 30th anniversary in the vibrant country of Ghana. The theme is: Tourism - Celebrating Diversity.
This year’s theme focuses on the world’s cultural wealth as well as the important role that sustainable tourism plays in revitalizing local traditions to build bridges among culture. Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted.
The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide. At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October of 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host country each year to act as the Organization's partner in the celebration of WTD. At its Fifteenth Session in Beijing, China, in October of 2003, the Assembly decided the following geographic order to be followed for World Tourism Day celebrations: 2006 in Europe; 2007 in South Asia; 2008 in the Americas and 2009 in Africa. Therefore this year in 2009, Ghana was chosen as the host country. A 2.5 hours walk is organized to celebrate the day in Penang. It will start from the Esplanade right to the Heritage Enclave, following a heritage trail that includes Litte India and Street of Harmony.
If you were wondering what those areas mean to the local culture and heritage, do join the walk. The fee is only RM10.00 per person and there are spots for only 150 people. The fees are only payable for those who are 17 years old and above. Those who are younger may join free of charge. Good news for children, a complimentary tour is also organized for them. Please register early as the spots are sold on first come first serve basis. This walk is organized by PTGA (Penang Tourist Guide Association). Make your payment to Maybank: 1070-1409-0564,
